Trouble Focus Stacking with Nikon Z7

Post by gjb526 »

Here is my setup:
Nikon Z7, FTZ, Nikon 105mm Macro Lens, 6' USB-C cable

Manual Mode
Focus Mode: AF-S
Release Mode: Single Frame
AF-Area Mode: Single Point AF
AF-S Priority Selection (Menu item A2): Release

Stacking "Preview" shows each slice correctly. When I try to capture, all pictures are the same with no change in focus. I changed cables with no change in results. What am I missing?

This sound like it is caused by using the wrong live view focus mode on the body. You can set this on the body LCD menu. Basically you don't want it to autofocus when you capture an image. You can test this by unplugging the USB cable and putting the lens cap on and then turning on live view. Try to capture an image - it should do it immediately without activating the lens focus motor. You should be able hear and see the focus change on the lens barrel. Once you can capture an image like that, you are using the correct focus mode for focus stacking.
