Well I'm partial to ControlMyNikon for macro or focus stacking tasks as ControlMyNikon has integration with Zerene but you can still use Helicon with it as well. You had mentioned ring focusing - if that means that you are physically changing the focus by rotating the focus ring by hand, then ControlMyNikon's dedicated focus stacking workflow will not work with that method as it will want to change the focus for each slice. Best to give the 14-day free trial a try and see how it goes.
